First contacts among the CTG of Lombardy Region, Association Carta di Cividale and the Committee for the Promotion of the Patriarchy of Aquileia Project
The Forum of the Associations for the Promotion of Social Tourism “Civitas Austriae”, which has a regional character, was born in Cividale following the model of Brescia. The chairmanship is given to Mr. Bruno Cesca, a professional journalist and expert in cultural and socio-economic development projects. Its members are: the CTG Stelutis Alpinis, Centro Turistico Studentesco of Pordenone, Centro Turistico Studentesco of Trieste, Centro Turistico Acli of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Associazione per lo Sviluppo degli Studi Storici e Artistici di Cividale, Associazione Amici dei Musei di Cividale, Committee for the Promotion of the Patriarchy of Aquileia Project and Association Carta di Cividale.
The Forums of Cividale and Brescia start up a preliminary study on the possible cooperation to be developed and, once identified the “common Longobard paradigm”, they take actions for the progressive involvement of their respective Municipalities, also thanks to the contribution of APT of Brescia.
First joined press conference at the APT in Brescia. The present are: - for the Forums of Cividale and Brescia - Mr. Bruno Cesca, Mr. Diego Scarbolo, Mr. Luigi Bandera, and the General Secretary of the Fondazione CAB, Mr. Agostino Mantovani. The first hypothesis of joined work between Cividale and Brescia along a “Longobard Route” is put forward
Joined participation of the Forums of Brescia and Cividale in meetings and conferences (Verona, Monza, Mestre, Milan, Livorno and Rome).
The Lord Mayors of Cividale and Brescia and the Chairmen of the Forums of the two towns sign the collaboration agreement and set up a study group whose task is that of formulating a plan of development of the partnership in a cultural and touristic-economic perspective.
The study group write the reference document (see section “Documents”) where the creation of a “geo-cultural corridor” of Longobard matrix as well as of interregional and international characteristics is outlined: the skeleton of a Big European Itinerary based on central-eastern and northern European relations already started up by the Committee for the Promotion of the Patriarchy of Aquileia Project and the Association Carta di Cividale.
The Municipality of Cividale officially decides to promote the nomination to WHL UNESCO and sets up an institutional Committee made up of the representatives appointed by the main institutions and public bodies of Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Authority that are competent on the management of the territory.
The Chairmen of the Forum of the Associations for the Promotion of Social Tourism of Brescia and Cividale (including the Centro Turistico Giovanile, Centro Turistico Studentesco, Centro Turistico ACLI, ARCI, Association Patriarchy of Aquileia, and Association Carta di Cividale) found the “Association Longobardia” with the purpose of creating an integrated “net-shaped” tourist system to coordinate the subscribers for the started procedure of the nomination but also for setting up a wider European network “Longobardia - European Virtual Region”, a “European geo-cultural corridor” that connects the sites with Longobard matrix from Scandinavia to the Ionian Sea, following the journey of the Longobard peoples in history.
The scientific works to apply for the nomination start. At the beginning the nomination includes only the Longobard centres of power in northern Italy (Cividale del Friuli, Brescia, and Castelseprio-Torba).
The nomination named “Cividale and the First Longobard Sites of Power in Italy” is officially included on the Italian Tentative List.
The nomination “Monte Sant’Angelo and the Via Sacra Langobardorum”is officially included on the Italian Tentative List.
The MiBAC promotes the “Longobard” serial nomination for the official submission to UNESCO in Paris in 2008.

The MiBAC combines the two Longobard nominations by including the Longobard monuments of Langobardia minor (Spoleto, Campello sul Clitunno, Benevento and Monte Sant’Angelo) in the serial site. The name of the combined nomination becomes “Italia Langobardorum. Centres of Power and Worship (568-774 A.D.)”

The preliminary investigation envisages the scrupulous and careful examination of the 300 pages of the scientific dossier and of the tomes of the management plan of the sites consisting of 750 pages, divided into two volumes. In October 2008 the inspector of Icomos carries out the field surveys, visiting all the nominated centres and monuments.
